February 18, 2014 – Manitoba Deputy Minister of Health Joins Mental Health Commission of Canada Board of Directors

Calgary, Alberta | Tuesday, February 18, 2014

David Goldbloom, Chair, is pleased to announce the election of Karen Herd, CA, to the Mental Health Commission (MHCC) of Canada Board of Directors.

Herd, Deputy Minister of Health for Manitoba, brings a wealth of finance and governance experience to her new role with the MHCC Board. She joined Manitoba Health in 2005 as Executive Director, Finance, and in 2008, became the Assistant Deputy Minister and Chief Financial Officer.

“Over her many years in public service, Karen has cultivated a keen understanding of healthcare, government, and finance,” says Goldbloom. “Navigating the financial waters of healthcare administration, while keeping people and their needs front and centre is a unique skill and one which will be of immense significance to the MHCC Board.”

Joining the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority (WRHA) in 1998, Herd worked in finance as Controller and later as Administrative Director for the WRHA Surgery Program until 2005. Herd’s civil service career began in 1992 with a posting within Internal Audit in Manitoba Education and Training.

Herd holds Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Manitoba and has been a Chartered Accountant for more than 20 years. She is also a member of the Institute of Corporate Directors, recently completing the not-for-profit governance course. She has taught in the area of finance at both the University of Manitoba and Red River College in Winnipeg.
