October 7, 2014 – Mental Health Commission of Canada Applauds Mental Illness Awareness Week

OTTAWA – Mental Illness Awareness Week is taking place across Canada this week thanks to the outstanding efforts of the Canadian Alliance of Mental Illness and Mental Health (CAMIMH). The Mental Health Commission of Canada is proud to participate in the week’s events and congratulates CAMIMH for its leadership in this initiative.

“Mental Illness Awareness Week is an important opportunity to celebrate the progress we are making. However, it also reminds us of the work that still needs to be done to implement the blueprint for change recommended in Changing Directions, Changing Lives: The Mental Health Strategy for Canada,” said Louise Bradley, President & CEO of the Mental Health Commission of Canada, adding; “this is why we at the Commission are so pleased to support our CAMIMH partners in raising the level of awareness of this important subject.”

Prominent in the discussion this week will be the “Faces of Mental Illness”, five people who are courageously sharing their stories of their experiences with mental illness in order to further educate and raise awareness levels amongst Canadians From coast to coast. “We need champions like this year’s “Faces of Mental Illness”, who are working hard at the local level to inspire change”, concluded Ms. Bradley, who will be speaking at a breakfast for Parliamentarians on October 7, 2014.
