April 9, 2015 – Statement from Louise Bradley, President and CEO of the Mental Health Commission of Canada on the appointment of new board chair

OTTAWA, ON – On behalf of the Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC), our Board of Directors, Executive Leadership Team and staff members, I am delighted to extend my warm congratulations to the Hon. Michael H. Wilson on his appointment as the Chair of the MHCC Board of Directors.

Mr. Wilson is an upstanding Canadian with a long history of public service. His distinguished career includes serving as Ambassador of Canada to the United States and leading a number of federal ministries.

A long-time champion of mental health issues, Mr. Wilson’s commitment encompasses the establishment of the Cameron Parker Holocombe Wilson Chair in Depression Studies at the University of Toronto, as well as involvement with esteemed organizations such as Brain Canada and the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health.

Mr. Wilson succeeds Dr. David Goldbloom, who has served as the MHCC Board Chair since 2012.  I would like to express my personal gratitude to Dr. Goldbloom for his tremendous leadership and his unwavering commitment to improving the lives of people with lived experience of mental illness and their families.

Many proud accomplishments were achieved under Dr. Goldbloom’s tenure as Chair; however much work remains to be done.  As we move forward with our ambitious agenda of advancing the promotion of mental health – and the prevention of mental illness – I am confident Mr. Wilson’s leadership will have a direct impact on our ability to continue to deliver the meaningful change Canadians deserve.

I look forward to working with Mr. Wilson in an effort to address emerging challenges and seize future opportunities.
