October 22, 2014 – Statement on the Canadian Medical Association 2014 Media Awards for Health Reporting

Ottawa, ON – The Mental Health Commission of Canada is pleased to congratulate Hélène Magny on being named the inaugural winner of the Canadian Medical Association’s Award for Excellence in Mental Health Journalism. Ms. Magny, a freelance documentary producer, won the award for her film portraying the story of the treatment and rehabilitation of forensic patients at Montreal’s Institut Pinel. Her documentary Pinel aired on Radio-Canada’s Réseau de l’Information in 2013.

For more than a decade the Canadian Medical Association has hosted awards honouring outstanding Canadian journalism that enhances the public’s understanding of health, the health system and the role of health professionals. With the introduction of this award for excellence in mental health journalism, The Canadian Medical Association has recognised the importance of this subject. The Mental Health Commission of Canada believes that this award will serve to encourage journalists to pursue this subject matter as well as to educate Canadians in all regions of the country on issues related to mental health and mental illness.

This award was presented to Ms. Magny at the Canadian Medical Association’s Gala celebrating the 2014 Media Awards for Health Reporting held in Ottawa on October 21, 2014.
