Factitious Disorder, previously known as Munchausen Syndrome, is a mental health condition where a person pretends to be sick or purposely causes symptoms of illness in themselves to get attention, sympathy, or care from others. They may go to extreme lengths, like faking injuries, taking harmful actions, or lying about medical problems. This behaviour is about being seen as a patient or feeling cared for. People with Munchausen Syndrome may not be aware of why they are doing this, and it can be difficult to treat because the person often denies the behaviour. It is different from pretending to be sick for a specific reason, like avoiding something, and is considered a serious mental health issue.
