The hypothalamus is a small but critical part of the brain located just below the thalamus and above the brainstem. It plays a central role in regulating many of the body’s essential functions such as temperature, sleep and appetite. It communicates with the limbic system to influence emotional responses and behaviours, such as stress and aggression. It also plays a role in sexual behaviour and reproductive processes.
