Manic phase

A manic phase is a period associated with bipolar disorder characterized by an abnormally elevated, expansive, or irritable mood, along with increased energy and activity levels. This phase can significantly impact a person’s thoughts, behaviour, and functioning. 

Some of the characteristics of a manic phase include: 

  • Elevated mood, happy or overjoyed  
  • Irritable or agitated 
  • Increased energy and activity levels 
  • Not feeling like sleeping 
  • Racing thoughts, making it difficult to focus. 
  • Talkativeness or speaking more rapidly than usual. 
  • Impulsivity and risk-taking behaviour that could include spending sprees or unwise business decisions. 
  • Having an inflated sense of self-esteem or grandiosity
  • Being easily distracted.
