Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs is a theory that explains how human needs are arranged in order of importance. The idea is that people must first satisfy basic needs before they can focus on higher-level needs. The five levels are:
- Basic Needs: Things like food, water, and shelter.
- Safety: Feeling safe and secure in your environment.
- Love and Belonging: The need for friendships, family, and relationships.
- Esteem: Feeling respected and valued by yourself and others.
- Self-Actualization: Reaching your full potential and becoming the best version of yourself.
Although the needs are often described as existing in a set order, current perspectives note that the needs can occur at the same time and in different orders.
