A psychotherapist is professional trained to address wellness, relationships, personal growth, and mental illness or distress through a relational process. Counselling therapy is currently regulated in Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island.  As of August 2024, Alberta is pending proclamation by its provincial college. Psychotherapy is regulated in Ontario and Quebec. In July 2024, the government of British Columbia designated psychotherapy as a Health Profession under the Health Professions Act.
