News Release
Ottawa, March 26, 2025 – The Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC) is pleased to announce the reappointment of long-time mental health champion Chuck Bruce as Chair of its Board of Directors. The decision was formalized at this week’s board meeting in Ottawa, where members gathered to advance the Commission’s mission and discuss emerging mental health trends across the country.
For nearly two decades, the MHCC has been at the forefront of reducing stigma, shaping policy, and driving innovative solutions to improve mental health outcomes for all Canadians. Under Mr. Bruce’s continued leadership, the Commission remains committed to fostering collaboration across the sector and strengthening Canada’s mental health system.
“The impacts of mental health challenges facing Canada are playing out in our schools, workplaces, cities and communities.” said Bruce, who now holds the distinction of being the longest-serving Chair since the MHCC’s inception in 2007. “The work of the MHCC is more pressing than ever and I am honoured to continue supporting the Commission in promoting, developing, and implementing programs and strategies that rise to this critical moment.”
Mr. Bruce’s nomination for reappointment was made earlier this year by the then-Minister responsible for Mental Health and Addictions and Associate Minister of Health, Ya’ara Saks, in accordance with the MHCC’s bylaws. In her nomination letter, former Minister Saks recognized his instrumental role in advancing Canada’s mental health agenda.
Beyond his leadership at the MHCC, Mr. Bruce serves as the inaugural CEO of Provident10, overseeing the administration of Newfoundland and Labrador’s Public Service Pension Plan, managing an $11 billion fund, and supporting over 60,000 members.
The MHCC Board of Directors is made up of diverse, passionate and dedicated representatives from across Canada, including people with lived and living experience, and federal, provincial and territorial government appointments.
