Take a Minute, Change a Life on World Suicide Prevention Day

On behalf of the Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC), Louise Bradley, President and CEO, made the following statement.

“On Sunday, September 10, World Suicide Prevention Day, we have an opportunity to reflect on how we can work together to end suicide in our communities.

This year’s theme, Take a Minute, Change a Life, is a reminder that we all have a role to play as compassionate friends, family members, colleagues and neighbors.  Even more importantly, we have a responsibility to raise awareness about this pressing public health issue, and to reduce the stigma that can prevent people from seeking help.

Together, the MHCC and the Canadian Association of Suicide Prevention, have created an online suicide prevention education program to help family physicians and nurses be alert to warning signs and risk factors.  While health care providers may be uniquely placed to intervene, we can all engage in talking calmly and without judgement with someone who may be in distress. Beginning a conversation with genuine concern is all it may take to help someone feel less isolated.

This year, on September 10, wear a ribbon, make a social media post with the hashtag #WSPD17 and declare your willingness to take a minute, change a life.”
