Statement on the National Housing Strategy by Louise Bradley, President and CEO Mental Health Commission of Canada

“On the heels of the release of the At Home/Chez Soi Sustainability Study, which highlights the effectiveness of the Housing First approach, the Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC) applauds the federal government for engaging Canadians in the development of a national housing strategy.

The need for affordable housing among people living with mental health problems and illnesses is nearly double that of the general population. The urgent challenges faced by this vulnerable community must be top-of-mind when crafting a national plan.

Safe and secure housing has a profound and life-changing impact on a person’s health and well-being. Enshrined as a recommendation in Changing Directions, Changing Lives: The Mental Health Strategy for Canada, and borne out in groundbreaking research like At Home/Chez Soi, the MHCC has called for improved housing policy for more than eight years.

The MHCC hopes to support the Government of Canada to pursue an inclusive strategy that accords people living with mental health problems and illnesses the dignity and hope of a safe and affordable home.”
