Statement for Survivors of Suicide Loss Day by Louise Bradley, President & CEO of the Mental Health Commission

“Tomorrow, we pause to remember lives cut short by suicide.  Every year, 4,000 people in Canada take their own lives. As shocking as this number may seem, it doesn’t tell the whole story. There are many more people whose deaths by suicide go unregistered.

For some families and friends, a death by suicide is a loss that comes with both heartbreak and isolation.  Stigma and discrimination can make it more difficult for survivors to seek support in their grief.  For those of us who have lost a loved one to suicide, unanswered questions may complicate our own feelings.

If you are grieving a loved one today, you are not alone. For every death by suicide, new advocates for suicide prevention take up the cause.   We must stand together, side by side, united in hope for a future where people seek and receive the help they need.”

Send a message of hope and resilience. Sign the virtual wall to raise awareness for suicide prevention.
