Mental Health Commission of Canada Statement on Mental Health Week

From Mental Health Commission of Canada

The Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC) is proud to stand with the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) and all our partners, to urge Canadians to #GETLOUD in support of mental health.

The 67th annual Mental Health Week offers us an important opportunity to urge investments in critical community-based services, including prevention and promotion initiatives to address the social determinants of health – like education, housing and child care.

In 2018, one in five Canadians will experience a mental health problem or illness. But five out of five Canadians should be monitoring their mental state with the same interest they devote to managing their blood-pressure or any other physical concern. Whether you are living with a diagnosable mental illness, or managing the stresses of daily life, we all have mental health needs.  Just as a person living with diabetes can be the picture of health through careful disease management, the same is true of someone living in recovery from a mental illness.

Through 67 years of concerted public awareness, CMHA has helped raise our collective consciousness around mental health problems and illnesses. Help us leverage that knowledge and act. Enroll in a Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) course or #sharehope with those who may be struggling. We can all take steps to become more compassionate, aware and involved.

This week, we encourage Canadians to #GETLOUD in support of mental health.
