Statement by Louise Bradley, President and CEO, Mental Health Commission of Canada:
“The Mental Health Commission of Canada commends the Government of Canada for its apology to the residential school survivors of Newfoundland and Labrador. This is an important step in the ongoing work towards reconciliation in Canada.
This apology acknowledges responsibility for the trauma endured by the Indigenous peoples who survived living in Newfoundland and Labrador’s residential schools. It is critical to redressing the ongoing legacy of residential schools which systematically shattered kinships, culture and community and has caused lasting social and economic disparities.
It will take all of us, Indigenous and non-Indigenous people, to build upon our strengths to achieve wellness in our country.”
