Mental Health Commission of Canada recognizes the strength and contribution of family caregivers

From Mental Health Commission of Canada

Today’s National Caregiver’s Day is an important opportunity to recognize the strength and resiliency of the family caregivers who care for people living with mental health problems and illnesses. Over the last two years, the Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC) has proudly partnered with key leaders in Canada’s family caregiver community in order to listen to their needs and amplify the value of their contributions.

To that end, the MHCC is poised to release Flip the Conversation, a campaign that seeks to turn the family caregiver dialogue around. While validating the challenges faced by many caregivers — and acknowledging their normal feelings of isolation or being overwhelmed — Flip the Conversation focuses on making them feel supported. As an integral part of the care team, they are part of a larger, invaluable community. By turning a negative discussion into a positive one, Flip the Conversation works to increase awareness and inspire hope.

Building on this effort, the MHCC has also created a Best Advice Guide to help health-care providers involve family caregivers and recognize the crucial role they play in fostering recovery.

April 2 may be the day to honour family caregivers, but we should remember that caregivers put the needs of loved ones ahead of their own 365 days every year. We can bolster their efforts by acknowledging their selflessness, advocacy, and unflagging commitment to securing better care for a family member or friend.
