Mental wellness experiences of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis post-secondary learners

A research series from Indspire – an Indigenous national charity that invests in the education and of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis learners – explores the strengths and needs that shape the mental health and well-being of First Nations, Inuit and Métis post-secondary students. Supported by the Mental Health Commission of Canada, the series of four reports draws on student survey data, learning circles, and lived experiences, highlighting:

  • the importance of belonging and cultural connectedness in supporting mental wellness
  • barriers related to trust, safety, and stigma that affect access to supports
  • the need for holistic and culturally informed approaches to mental wellness

Grounded in student perspectives, these reports offer valuable insights for post-secondary institutions working to implement the National Standard of Canada for Mental Health and Well-Being for Post-Secondary Students in ways that reflect Indigenous students’ priorities and needs.
