The Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC) is proud to announce the appointment of Professor Brian Mishara as Principal Investigator for MHCC’s Roots of Hope – A community suicide prevention project.

Roots of Hope is a national initiative that focuses on the development of evidence-based best practices and suicide prevention guidelines and tools and is intended to support the implementation of suicide prevention activities across Canada.

A comprehensive procurement process was undertaken to secure a Principal Investigator to oversee the national-level evaluation of the project. Professor Mishara’s background and experience were deemed an excellent fit.

Professor Mishara is Professor of Psychology and Director of the Centre for Research and Intervention on Suicide, Ethical Issues and End-of-Life Practices (CRISE) at the Université du Québec à Montréal. In addition, he is an internationally renowned expert in suicidology, with a distinguished publication history and significant experience in conducting multi-site evaluations of suicide prevention activities. Professor Mishara’s community links are similarly extensive for he is currently Vice-Chairperson of Befrienders Worldwide, an international network of suicide prevention helplines, and was formerly the President of the International Association for Suicide Prevention and the Canadian Association for Suicide Prevention. He is also a founder of Suicide Action Montreal, and the Association québécoise pour la prévention du suicide.
