Summary Report from the Public Private Insurers System Capacity Roundtable

Public and private sectors have long played significant and interconnected roles in the delivery of mental health and substance use health (MHSUH) services across Canada. In early 2024, the Mental Health Commission of Canada and the Public Private Insurers Collaborative hosted a three-part virtual roundtable series, bringing together expertise from public and private sectors, people with lived and living experience, and MHSUH service providers.

The summary report provides insights into collaborative strategies for addressing barriers and enhancing access to public and private MHSUH services in Canada. Action is recommended to meet the emerging needs of people living in Canada.

Participants identified several priority areas for collaboration, including:

  1. Assessing current system capacity.
  2. Creating common standards of care.
  3. Adopting and promoting community-driven programming.
  4. Developing strategies to address workforce capacity challenges.
  5. Leveraging and scaling innovative practices.
  6. Continuing to build on efforts to enhance data sharing and system navigation.
